[ARCHIVED] Town of Yountville Provides Clarifying Information Regarding Interim Dog Park at Yountville Commons

The Town of Yountville values the input and concerns of our residents regarding the Town Council decision to establish an interim dog park at the Yountville Commons site. We appreciate the support and concerns from residents and would like to provide clarifying information while reiterating our commitment to serving all members of our community, including families with children.

The creation of a dog park in Yountville has been a longstanding conversation. During the public outreach for the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, creating a dog park was identified as a priority goal. Discussions were also held during the March 21 and May 16 Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission meetings, where multiple potential sites for a trial program of off-leash dog hours were considered. After considering feedback from residents and the Commission, the Yountville Commons field was recommended as the most suitable site.

The interim dog park will use the existing infrastructure on the northeast side of the field, incorporating a portion of the field and dugouts. The total current field space of the site is 2.9 acres. The dog park design is 11,040 square feet of space, or .38 acres. This will allow for a remaining 2.52 acres of space for open use.

The interim dog park will initially operate from 8 AM to dusk, with rules designed to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all users. A community member group will be formed to assist with monitoring and providing feedback, ensuring the interim dog park’s smooth operation. Staff will track maintenance needs and community feedback and make adjustments as necessary during this interim phase.

The Town of Yountville remains committed to providing recreational opportunities for all residents. The decision to create an interim dog park does not diminish our support for youth activities. The existing Kaneshiro Field is not being altered with this plan. The Town continues to work on the initial phase of maintenance and repair to bring the site up to safety and maintenance standards, including irrigation of the field space, which has fallen into disrepair over time.

We value the input of our community members and encourage ongoing dialogue to address any concerns. Our goal is to balance the needs and desires of all residents while planning for the long-term use of the Yountville Commons site.
