September is National Preparedness Month – Let’s Get Ready, Yountville!
Each September, National Preparedness Month reminds us of the importance of being ready for any type of disaster—whether it’s wildfires, earthquakes, flooding, or public health emergencies. Yountville, nestled in Napa Valley, is no stranger to the challenges that natural disasters can bring. Our ability to respond effectively during an emergency depends on the steps we take today to prepare. Throughout September, we’ll be sharing practical tips and resources to help Yountville residents and businesses get ready.
Community Events
We also invite you to participate in community events this month, including:
Stay Informed
Sign up for emergency alerts through Alert Napa County to receive timely updates. You can register multiple addresses including home, school, or work. Visit ReadyNapaCounty.gov to get started. Already enrolled? Log in to verify your information is up to date. You can also register the address of someone you care for, like an aging parent or neighbor. Information is critical in an emergency!
Make a Plan
Emergency plans are at the heart of disaster preparedness. Every household should have a well-thought-out plan that includes communication strategies, evacuation routes, and a designated meeting place. The plan should account for family members’ unique needs, such as older adults, children, individuals with disabilities, and pets. It is essential to review your plan regularly.
Assemble a Go-Bag
Prepare a disaster supply kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlight, batteries, first-aid supplies, and important documents. Customize your kit to meet your family’s unique needs, including medications and pet items.
Learn Safety Skills
Learn lifesaving skills by taking a first aid and CPR class, practicing how to use a fire extinguisher, and keep your residence safe from home fires by completing a fire safety checklist for renters and owners.
Get Involved
Disasters bring communities together. Connect with your neighbors now. Don’t wait until a crisis. Attend community functions and use them as opportunities to strengthen connections. Work on building a list of neighbors, friends, or family members who may need extra help in the case of an emergency, such as older adults or those with mobility challenges.
