The Town of Yountville invites community members of all ages to take part in California Coastal Cleanup Day 2025 on Saturday, September 20, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers will gather at the Yountville Commons parking lot before heading out to clean up along the Hopper Creek Trail area.
Since its beginnings in 1985, California Coastal Cleanup Day has grown into the state’s largest volunteer event, with communities from the coast to inland areas coming together to stop trash where it starts. What began with 2,500 Californians has expanded into a global movement, inspiring millions of volunteers worldwide to protect oceans, rivers, and waterways.
Locally, Napa County has proudly contributed to this statewide effort. Since 1999, volunteers in Napa have removed more than 215,000 pounds of waste from the Napa River Watershed. These cleanups have helped prevent trash from traveling downstream and ultimately reaching the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a floating mass of debris in the Pacific Ocean that is now more than twice the size of Texas.
Why It Matters
Though Yountville is not directly on the coast, our creeks and rivers flow quickly to the Napa River and then to the Pacific Ocean. Trash left on our streets, trails, and parks can travel hundreds of miles, threatening wildlife and marine ecosystems.
Did You Know?
The average person in the U.S. produces 4.9 pounds of trash per day.
Every year, an estimated 2 million tons of trash enter the ocean through rivers.
Plastic dominates the debris collected—eight of the top ten items found worldwide are single-use plastics.
Cigarette butts have been among the top items collected in California since the 1980s.
Community Impact
Coastal Cleanup Day is more than a trash pickup; it’s a celebration of community and shared responsibility for the environment. By participating, Yountville residents and visitors demonstrate their commitment to healthy waterways and vibrant outdoor spaces.
