Napa River Flooding

If the Napa River overflows its bank, Yountville can expect to see the following flooding occur:

  • Waters will flood the vineyards to the east of town and come up onto the properties bordering the town limits at the eastern and south end of town including along Holly Street, Vineyard Park and including portions of Oak Circle adjacent to the park, and along the Flood Wall protecting the Rancho De Napa and Bella Vista communities.
  • Yountville Cross Road (east and west of the Napa River) will likely be closed due to water over the road.
  • CA 29 south of town has been closed in past flood incidents.

Mobile Home Park Flood Wall Barriers and Gates

In 2006 the Town constructed flood wall barriers around Rancho De Napa and Bella Vista (formerly Gateway). These communities had previously experienced periodic flooding from Napa River flooding events. The flood walls have successfully kept water out of these neighborhoods since the construction of the flood wall.

Each park has a gate entry that can be installed to protect the park from water flowing from the entry roads adjacent to Hopper Creek. It will be a rare and significant rain storm where the flood gates are installed, but it could happen. In this potential situation, residents will be advised that the gate will be closed and they will not be able to leave the community for the duration of the rain. If residents wish to leave they will be encouraged to do so and given a brief time to evacuate before the gate is locked into place. Residents are advised to pay attention to the notices and alerts given about the need to install the entry flood wall gates.

Napa River Flooding 1The Town's public works crews annually practice installing and then reopening the entry gate barriers.
